In chess, the concept of initiative refers to the ability to make threats and force the opponent to respond to them. It is the ability to take control of the game and dictate the course of play. Having the initiative can be a significant advantage, as it allows a player to make threats and put pressure on the opponent's position without having to worry about defending against the opponent's threats. A player with the initiative is said to be "on the offensive" while the opponent is "on the defensive." Initiative can be gained or lost through a variety of means, such as making attacking moves, creating weaknesses in the opponent's position, or forcing the opponent to make suboptimal moves.
